John Ormiston graduated from the University of Otago Medical School with distinction in Medicine and Surgery, the Boyd Prize in Medicine, Stanley Batchelor Memorial Prize in Surgery and the highest grades in his class of that year.
He trained in cardiology at Green Lane Hospital and in Los Angeles. He played a major role in developing interventional cardiology in New Zealand and has been called the “father of interventional cardiology” in this country.
He has introduced to New Zealand many new techniques and technologies including the world’s first fully bioresorbable drug-eluting stent, and the first transcatheter aortic valve implantation in the Asia Pacific region.
He founded interventional cardiology research at Green Lane Hospital more than 20 years ago. His research has been clinical and in addition, he is internationally known for his bench testing of cardiological devices.
The almost 300 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals include 5 invited Lancet editorials. In 2004 he was appointed Associate Professor and in 2014 full Professor of Medicine at the University of Auckland School of Medicine. In 2008 the Royal College of Physicians, London awarded him an honorary fellowship (FRCP).
In 2011 for services to medicine he became an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, one of the orders established in New Zealand by Queen Elizabeth II.
He has worked part-time in the public hospital system but has enjoyed the business side of private practice playing a major role 29 years ago in founding the very successful Mercy Angiography (now called Intra). In addition, 20 years ago he was a founding member of New Zealand’s largest cardiology group, the Auckland Heart Group.
In 2017 he received the Ethica Award, the highest honour of the European cardiovascular intervention academies. “The award recognised his outstanding contribution to investigating innovations in interventional cardiology, including pioneering.
