Dr Becky Yi-Wen Liao

Dr Becky Yi-Wen Liao is a New Zealand and Cleveland Clinic-trained cardiologist who works at Middlemore Hospital and previously at Cleveland Clinic. She specialises in electrophysiology/ablation and pacing. She is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, American College of Cardiology and Heart Rhythm Society (International).

Her specialty expertise and interests include: general cardiology, arrhythmias,
electrophysiology studies/catheter ablation (including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, all SVTs, PVCs, ventricular tachycardia), pacing (including conduction system pacing, cardiac resynchronisation therapy, transvenous and subcutaneous defibrillators and leadless devices), and Watchman device implantation for stroke prevention.

Dr Liao received her medical degree from the University of Otago, Dunedin and Wellington, New Zealand. She completed her internal medicine training at all Auckland regional hospitals, followed by advanced training in general cardiology, including echocardiography, electrophysiology/pacing, and cardiac catheterisation rotations at Tauranga, Middlemore and Auckland City hospitals. She then spent two years from 2022 to 2024 at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic, Ohio USA for her advanced electrophysiology and
pacing clinical fellowship training. After this, she was appointed as a
cardiologist/electrophysiologist at Cleveland Clinic/Mercy Hospital in 2024, prior to returning to New Zealand in 2026.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr Liao is also passionate about research and
education. She has multiple peer-reviewed publications published in major international Electrophysiology and Pacing journals and has regularly presented research abstracts at annual national and international cardiology and electrophysiology scientific sessions. She was awarded the Young Investigator Award at the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand annual scientific meeting in 2021 and was the recipient of the National Heart Foundation Overseas Training and Research Fellowship Grant in 2022. She was also appointed as Assistant Professor of Medicine by the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University in 2025-2026.
