Dr Wil Harrison
MBChb, MMedSci (Hons), FRACP
THG Pukekohe Clinic, THG South Auckland Clinic
My name is Dr Wil Harrison and I am New Zealand's first Maori cardiologist. I grew up in Gisborne, and I am of Ngati Porou and Rongowhakaata descent. I attended medical school in Auckland and also completed a Master's degree in cardiac pathology. I initially worked at Tauranga Hospital before returning to Auckland to train in general cardiology, and then went on to do post-graduate fellowships in interventional cardiology at Auckland City Hospital and William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, USA. I have been a consultant interventional cardiologist at Middlemore hospital since 2011.
I specialize in coronary angiography and complex coronary interventions, but I have a lot of experience treating general cardiac conditions as well. I have expertise in Maori and indigenous cardiac health and have worked with several Maori health committees and organizations nationwide. I also lecture in cultural competency and communication, and I take pride in speaking clearly and honestly with my patients as they navigate through their cardiac treatment.
