Dr Tom Wang

Tom Kai Ming Wang, is a clinical, multi-modality imaging and academic cardiologist and John Neutze Fellow based at Te Toka Tomai/Auckland City Hospital and the Heart Group. He grew up in Auckland and graduated from the University of Auckland Medical School as Senior Scholar in 2011. He undertook general medicine basic training and cardiology advanced training at Auckland City, Middlemore and North Shore Hospitals. After working 6-months as cardiologist at Middlemore Hospital and completing his MD research doctorate in 2019, he undertook the 2-year advanced cardiovascular imaging fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, the top-ranked cardiovascular hospital in the United States for 30 consecutive years. He stayed on as a cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic for 5-years, with concomitant roles of Assistant Professor then later Associate Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, before returning and bringing back his world-class skillset to New Zealand.

His clinical and research expertise and interests incorporate a wide range of cardiovascular diseases, including valvular heart disease, coronary heart disease, pericardial disease, heart failure/cardiomyopathies, aortic diseases, and cardiovascular prevention. He is highly competent with US board certification in the full arsenal of multi-modality cardiac imaging encompassing echocardiography (including transthoracic, stress, transoesophageal, and periprocedural/structural echocardiography), cardiovascular computed tomography (CT) and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (MRI), using these to optimize patient management. He has published over 270 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and 10 book chapters, presented over 300 research abstracts at national and international conferences, won ~15 research awards, is an active investigator in several clinical trials, and is on the editorial board and committees of multiple international cardiology journals and societies. Highlights include chairing the 2025 American College of Cardiology Clinical Concise Guidance Expert Consensus on pericarditis, and co-authoring the book chapter on pericardial diseases in Braunwald’s Heart Disease, the most referenced textbook in cardiology. He also has excellent interpersonal skills to which his patients and colleagues can attest to and is passionate about patient care and improving their cardiovascular outcomes.

Outside of work, Tom is a keen golfer, also plays basketball and piano, and loves travelling and spending time with family.
