Tom Kai Ming Wang is a general, multi-modality imaging and academic cardiologist and John Neutze Fellow based at Te Toka Tomai/Auckland City Hospital and the Heart Group. He is experienced in a wide range of cardiovascular diseases, working as a cardiologist in New Zealand and previously at Cleveland Clinic and as an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University. His exceptional clinical expertise is highlighted by chairing the 2025 American College of Cardiology Expert Consensus document on pericarditis, co-authoring the book chapter on pericardial diseases in Braunwald’s Heart Disease, the most referenced textbook in cardiology, and being a Fellow and on committees and editorial boards for multiple international cardiology and cardiovascular imaging societies and journals.

A former New Zealand Scholarship Premier Award winner, International Mathematical Olympiad bronze medalist, and University of Auckland Medical School (MBChB) Senior Scholar, Tom completed cardiology advanced training at Auckland City, Middlemore and North Shore Hospitals, along with his research doctorate (MD) at the University of Auckland. He then completed the 2-year cardiovascular imaging fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, the top-ranked US heart hospital for 30 consecutive years, before staying on another 5 years as a cardiologist there, as associate director of pericardial disease. He has published over 270 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and 10 book chapters, presented over 360 research abstracts at national and international conferences, won ~15 research awards, and is involved in several clinical trials.

Tom is passionate about patient care and improving their cardiovascular outcomes. He also has excellent interpersonal skills, to which his patients and colleagues can attest. Outside of work, he is a keen golfer, also plays basketball and piano, and loves travelling, following sports and spending time with family.
